what OSX version?
have you tried running "dscacheutil -flushcache" in terminal?

if you do "ping master.gamespy.com" in terminal, what IP address does it ping?

OS 10.6.8
Yes, I flushed and I restarted.

cbum$ ping master.gamespy.com
PING master.gamespy.com (109.71.69.254): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 109.71.69.254: icmp_seq=0 ttl=251 time=128.017 ms

hm, this looks ok

i unfortunately don't have mac version, i'll try to figure out what's wrong but it might take some time

just to be sure, you're still having freeze when you click on internet->multiplayer, right?

EDIT: looks like apple messed up dns resolving pretty badly in osx

can you do a test?
edit (the same way as you did with hosts) file /etc/resolv.conf and put there

order hosts, bind

do not reboot (that line will probably disappear on reboot), maybe try that "dscacheutil -flushcache" command

No change (yes, it freezes after I click on internet). I flushed again.
Note that I have no idea about Unix programming, so make sure I have a way to backtrack if one of your suggestions blows up my OS...

i'm aware of that, these modifications so far should be safe

please recheck if /private/etc/hosts wasn't overwritten on reboot, i'm reading that it sometimes is

as a last attempt, try may try this

dscl localhost -create /Local/Default/Hosts/master.gamespy.com IPAddress 109.71.69.254

if none of that works, i'm out of ideas for now ;-)

I checked, the private/etc/hosts edit is in there.

This is what I get with your latest:

cbum$ dscl localhost -create /Local/Default/Hosts/master.gamespy.com IPAddress 109.71.69.254
<main> attribute status: eDSPermissionError
<dscl_cmd> DS Error: -14120 (eDSPermissionError)

Anyway, thanks for your time. I'm going to bed... I'll check in tomorrow to see if you have any other suggestions.

then it needs root privileges

sudo dscl localhost -create /Local/Default/Hosts/master.gamespy.com IPAddress 109.71.69.254

Thanks - sudo worked, but no change in the freeze...

Re: GAMESPY SHUTDOWN / REPLACEMENT MASTER SERVER / FREEZE FI

that's unfortunate

after spending some time googling it seems that apple has a nice habit of completely breaking or changing how certain stuff works in every release so it's almost impossible to find a way that'd actually work in your version

i'll try to get osx 10.6 working in vmware and check myself what's going on there

there might be also a possibility to modify osx bf1942 binary to use the other master directly but i don't know if there are any crc checks in it and if you would be able to extract it and then replace

I found solution:

C:Windows, System32, drivers, etc ...file name "hosts"

Open it with bloc note and add at the end line 109.71.69.254 master.gamespy.com then register.

remove ext file .old

Try dns redirect in your router to make it OS transparent, these settings works for me.
