im not sure anymore where my host file come from it was long time ago but i think it was from team simple here the file i now use http://www.gamefront.com/files/24376368 ... w32ded.zip it allows me to host a server that both origin and cd players can join.
just make a BF1942_w32ded that all versions 1.6 .1.61 and origin can join

i've edited your .exe, it's untested

BF1942_w32ded_master.zip

you just download some hexeditor, find the text "master.gamespy.com" and replace it with "master.bf1942.sk" with trailing zero byte

(yellow bytes are those that were changed)

So since the gamespy server went down, it used to take forever to pull up the server list, and even then not one server appeared. I applied the hosts patch and I still don't see one server :\

1. do you still have long freeze when going to in-game server browser?
2. if you run the patcher again, does it say "Patch" or "Unpatch"?

I had a long freeze, ran the patch tool now it's instant. No servers appear. Says Unpatch.

However I think my problem is that I am trying the BF1942 multiplayer demo as it was a quick game to install and play and within the past few days seems EA pulled the plug. I just installed origin, and can't find where to download 1942 unless it's the "Play4Free."

now that you mention it, i have a feeling that bf1942 demo might have a different game code and as such wasn't imported / supported in the replacement master

EA removed bf1942 from origin when news about gamespy going down broke so unless you've added it to your account before, you can't download it from there

i'd just torrent installation cds, install patches and play, EA doesn't seem to care about this game anymore so i don't care about them either ;-)

Thanks for this great fix. It looks like a lot of people have transitioned.

I've made a reddit post that list this fix along with others.

I edited hosts file manually some time ago and it works fine, but for testing purposes I tried hosts patcher tool and found out that it crashes at the start so I don't even see what's inside its window. OS is Vista SP2, compatibility modes/running as admin changes nothing. Maybe it'll be useful
